Away Colours hero, Zinedine Zidane, veteran of 3 World Cups, 3 times FIFA World Player of the Year, taken from the brilliant ‘World Cup Draw,’ where one original drawing of a player is being released per day until the start of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. What a splendid idea. Beyond the wildest dreams of anything FIFA could dream up. Zidane is one of only 4 players who have scored in 2 different World Cup finals and was the undisputed King of the controlled pass. At the 1998 World Cup, then Azzurri team boss Cesare Maldini remarked that he would give up five players to have Zidane in his Italian squad. Zizou now spends his days as Assistant Coach and Sporting Director at former team, Real Madrid.
Some others we love: Socrates – footballing God, Brazil Captain, a qualified Doctor and one of the greatest attacking midfielders of the 20th century. Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira was born in Sao Paulo in 1954 and played in 2 World Cups for Brazil. Team mates and opponents alike praised Socrates for unprecedented levels of football intelligence on the pitch. Socrates sadly died in December 2011 but his contribution to world football is totally unforgettable.
Finally, Gabriel Batistuta, remember him? Batistuta, the daughter of an Argentinian slaughterhouse worker played in three World Cups and was the first player to score two hat-tricks in the competition. Batistuta has scored more goals for Argentina than any other player at a whopping great 56 goals. Messi has some catching up to do. Now Sporting Director at Club Atlético Colón Santa Fe, he played the majority of his playing career in Serie A and is a major Fiorentina leggenda, scoring a massive 168 goals in 296 appearances for the club.
